I have a fascination with maps, new, old, and ancient. The paper they're on, the details they hold, and the way they change over political time. When I pick up old map and find say, Iran down as Persia (amongst other significant changes to the world as 'I' know it, and of course the only way 'I' could ever conceive it to be) spirits up a little giggle and goof, as if I had just seen a stranger changing their trousers or some other childish idiosyncrasy.
Which is why it was pretty pleasing to see a modern take of maps and landscape art, in the work of Steven Walter, who has taken the personal, historical, and canny look at 'the map', illustrated be-au-tifully!
